Out in the Blue

Cyanotypes by Brooke Sauer

Out In The Blue is my ongoing body of work exploring the intersection of painting, printmaking, and alternative photographic methods.

As an avid hiker and backpacker, I spend much of my time learning about the natural world first-hand and reflecting on our symbiotic connection to it. My unique cyanotypes combine a very old photographic printing process with my background in painting and my love of botany and the outdoors.

Many of my prints utilize pressed plants that I collect while hiking. I refer to my botanical collection as a “nostalgic herbarium,” as each specimen holds a memory of a feeling, a place, and the people I was with when I collected them. I relate our human relationship to landscape as both a physical and metaphorical terrain to contemplate and protect—one that inspires feelings of joy, renewal, and reverence.

Connectivity and eco-psychology are core concepts that drive my work, and I hope to inspire viewers to go outside and explore their own internal landscape as they interact with and observe nature.

Brooke Sauer

Brooke Sauer is a Los Angeles artist working in painting, printmaking, and alternative photographic methods. Brooke is an avid hiker and her artworks are inspired by her experiences in nature. Brooke’s unique cyanotypes integrate science & art by combining a very old UV printing process (cyanotype), with her background in painting and her love of botany and the outdoors. She often uses pressed plants that she collects while hiking, and the rich blue hues (which are a result of the process), reference the color that she sees most while hiking: the sky, water, snow, and distant mountains. Brooke received her BFA from Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles, and her MFA in from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
